Conclusions

None of the existing approaches to the treatment of adjuncts provides a satisfactory framework for explaining surface order and semantic precedence effects. The standard HPSG approach makes no attempt to accommodate these effects whatsoever; the kasper:93 and vannoord_bouma:94 approaches both rely on unspecified principles for determining semantic precedence, and principles of constituent order to control the surface order of adjuncts. None of the approaches satisfactorily allows for interactions between these various principles. In the section that follows, I will attempt to develop a more satisfactory framework.
